Harlow Singers

Summer Concert 2022: Music & Rehearsal Tracks

The concert is at St James, High Wych on Sunday 3rd July at 3:30pm. We are meeting for a rehearsal before the concert. The rehearsal starts promptly at 2pm, so please arrive by 1:50pm.

Dress code is black below the waist (trousers or skirts) and white above the waist (shirts or blouses). Red scarfs for the women and red bow ties for the men will be provided. As will black folders to hold our music, if you don't already have one.

REHEARSAL TRACKS can be found HERE. There are not many at the moment, this will change as we get closer to the concert so be sure to check regularly. There will be tracks for each part (either Soprano, Alto & Men or Women & Men). For music with only one part there will still be a Men's & Women's rehearsal track, the Women's part will be as written, the Men's part will be down an octave.

SHEET MUSIC can also be found HERE if it exists. I cannot promise sheet music for all our pieces, but there will be for some. Big caveat, I can't guarantee I haven't made a mistake in creating these. So if you are happy with the music supplied by Sara, keep using it!

The following is a list of the pieces we're singing in the concert (in concert order):

Reading #1

  • Morning Has Broken - Sung with the audience
    • Harlow Singers Core Repertoire
    • Sara will play an entire verse as introduction then we sing all three verses in parts
    • Sheet music
    • Rehearsal tracks
  • Sumer Is Icumen In
    • Arrangement:
      • Piano intro
      • Men sing the first burden (pes I) twice (and continue to sing)
      • Alto's sing the second burden (pes II) twice (and continue to sing)
      • Soprano's sing the melody twice
      • Alto's stop singing the second burden and join the Soprano's singing the melody the second time through
      • After the Soprano's and Alto's finish the melody for the second time the men sing the first burden twice more
    • Sheet music
      • There are two versions, one with the original very old English lyrics titled "Sumer is Icumen in", the second is my notation of how Sara wants us to pronounce the lyrics titled "Summer Is A Coming In".
    • Rehearsal tracks
    • YouTube
      • Only the first 34 seconds is relevant for us. The Alto/Men sing the pes/pedal/drone and the Soprano/Alto sing the melody
  • El Grillo
    • Arrangement
      • Sing in parts all the way through once
      • Come back to the beginning and sing through to the end of section C
    • Sheet music
    • Rehearsal tracks
      • If you are struggling with the words, this YouTube version with score and lyrics might be useful. Note, we are singing a slightly different arrangement, but it is a good guide for pronunciation.

Reading # 2

  • The Gospel Train: Go down, Moses
    • From "The Gospel Train" (a different orange booklet)
    • This choir on YouTube are singing the whole Gospel Train melody, so just listen to the first 1:40
  • Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken
    • Sung with audience
    • Sara will play an entire verse as introduction then we sing all four verses
    • Sheet music
    • YouTube
  • Hills of the North
    • Sung with audience
    • Sara will play an entire verse as introduction then we sing verses 1, 2 & 4
    • Sheet music
    • YouTube
  • The God whom earth and sea and sky adore
    • Sung with audience
    • Sara will play an entire verse as introduction then we sing all four verses
    • Sheet music
    • YouTube (unfortunately they only sing verses 1, 2 & 4)

Reading #3

  • Ave Verum Corpus
  • Summertime
    • Sheet music
      • This version is written in the key we are singing, but is otherwise identical to the original
    • Rehearsal tracks
    • If you don't know how this goes, here is Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong singing it on YouTube
  • Think of a world without any flowers
    • Sung with audience
    • Sara will play an entire verse as introduction then we sing all three verses
    • YouTube (the video is a bit dodgy, but the audio is right)
  • He's got the whole world in his hand
    • Sung with audience
    • Sara will play an entire verse as introduction then we sing all five verses
